Mental health training for managers

Managers need to be able to take care of their own mental health and support the mental health of their teams. But without the proper support or training, many feel powerless and out of their depth.

When your managers can properly support their teams, those teams will thrive. As a result, you’ll see performance improvement across your organisation.

In an organisation where everyone is more aware and informed, mental health is no longer just the managers’ responsibility.

The training I offer

MHFA Mental Health Skills for Managers

I’m an accredited instructor for Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England, whose training courses are renowned as being the best MHFA training in the world.

After taking this standard four-hour course, your managers will:

  • Recognise when an employee is having mental health issues
  • Feel confident about having mental health conversations with their team members
  • Know where to go, and signpost others, for mental health support and guidance
  • Learn to set a good example by following good self-care practice and inspiring their teams to do the same.

They’ll also receive a certificate of attendance, and a variety of supporting resources to use during and after the course.

Modular mental health training for managers

I’ve developed several short courses and workshops specifically for managers, so they can learn about their own mental health and how to support their teams.

This training is modular, so you can choose the topics you want your managers to cover and in what level of detail. For example, you could choose segments of larger courses or focus on a specific subject for a more in-depth understanding.

Bespoke mental health training for managers

If you don’t feel a standard course will be specific enough, I also create bespoke mental health training for managers. These courses will be tailored for your organisation’s culture, branding, messaging, and needs.

With bespoke training, the content will be more personal and relatable. For example, the case studies can be adapted to feature recognisable situations and people. Or we can practice conversational skills surrounding mental health, including non-judgmental, active listening skills.

The course content can also help managers negotiate any organisational changes or developments you might be going through. Changes like mergers and restructuring can create stress and uncertainty, which can impact the whole team.

Why choose to work with me?

I see mental health from both sides

I spent the first 25 years of my career in corporate roles, working in both management and senior management. I understand the responsibilities your managers have and the pressures they’re under.

And, having been through my own mental health struggles and recovery, I have those additional insights to bring to my training.

I make mental health accessible to everyone

Helping others with their mental health isn’t just a job to me — it’s a passion. I care that my training is thought-provoking and really makes a difference to people.

My goal is to bring the topic to life and make the training relatable and valuable for every delegate. From presenting the course content in a range of formats to drawing on my own lived experience and encouraging participation from the room.

And by only delivering training three days a week, I make sure my delivery stays fresh and energetic — and doesn’t become stale or tired.

“Peter Abbott was insightful, incredibly knowledgeable and packed a huge amount of this knowledge into the two-day course.”

I offer post-training support

The training sessions don’t allow a lot of time for individual attention.

But if your managers feel they need further support after the session, they’re welcome to contact me by phone or Zoom.

To manage mental health and wellbeing in your organisation, your managers and their teams need different kinds of training.

When you get in touch, we’ll start with an initial consultation that will help determine the training and support you need.
