About Peter Abbott: mental health and wellbeing consultant

I’m one of the few mental health consultants who’s experienced the issues from a corporate and human perspective. From my work as a senior manager to my struggles with my own mental health. And I bring this experience to my training and consultancy work.

Who do I work with?

I work with conscientious clients who are making a commitment to improve mental health and wellbeing in their organisations.

This includes:

• Businesses
• Councils
• Charities
• Schools and colleges
• MHFAider® training.

Partnering with Manchester Mind

I’ve partnered with Manchester Mind since 2019. I’ve been involved in their initial client discussions to help them determine their clients’s needs.

I deliver courses for them, including MHFA courses and bespoke courses I’ve written myself. And I’ve run workshops on a variety of topics including Stress Awareness, 5 Ways to Wellbeing, Better Sleep Habits, and Mental Health Awareness.

“Peter is a wonderful ball of energy, knowledge, and passion when it comes to Mental Health and Wellbeing.

I’ve worked alongside Peter in his capacity as a freelance trainer at Manchester Mind for several years upon recommendation from another trainer. At Manchester Mind, our core values (openness, belonging, strength and collaboration) are woven through everything we do. In meeting Peter, we discussed these values and he certainly aligned with them; his openness and honesty, and willingness to support and be part of the team. We were able to work together through difficult times, including adapting to delivering training differently through COVID, and I can honestly say it’s been a pleasure, both personally and professionally.

Peter delivers MHFA training, along with training developed by Manchester Mind, in which he has also been part of the development of some courses due to his knowledge and passion of the subject. His passion is something that really stands out, and for this reason, he receives great feedback for the training and workshops he delivers, sharing his lived experience and allowing the stories to bring some tough subjects to life in an appropriate and experienced manner.

We’ve often have specific requests for Peter to return to some organisations which is a testament to the work he does and shares our aim in continuing support for organisations on their mental health and wellbeing journey. Thanks, Peter, for everything you do.”

Open courses for the public

In addition to my client work, I deliver online courses and workshops that anyone can attend. If you’re interested, you can view my forthcoming events.

Who have I worked with?

Here are some of the clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with so far.

Do you need help with your organisation’s mental health and wellbeing strategy, training, policymaking or implementation?

Why work with me?

I come from a corporate background

I spent the first 25 years of my career working in corporate settings. First, in business operations and project management roles. Then moving to London, where I held high-level managerial and senior positions before starting a business of my own.

Having this background allows me to see the whole picture and understand your organisation from a human, risk-averse, and bottom-line perspective.

“Peter delivered a series of Mental Health Awareness sessions for people managers at Rivus. He delivered the content in an engaging and interactive way, and it really resonated with a diverse audience, which is crucial when the content is so important. We’ve had lots of great feedback for Peter from managers internally and would highly recommend him for mental health training.” ~ Rivus

I’ve struggled with my own mental health

My own struggles are what prompted me to become a mental health consultant.

While working in London, I got to a point where my mental health had declined so severely, I was forced to step away. I left London and returned to Manchester, where I was diagnosed with a number of mental health conditions.

During my recovery, I learnt a lot about mental health, what it means, and how it can affect you on a day-to-day basis.

I use my own experience of mental health and recovery in every consultation and training session. This brings the subject to life, makes it easier to understand, improves learning and encourages outstanding engagement.

“Peter was excellent in engaging the group and was very personable. He put you at ease immediately and you felt like you could open up to him. He related a lot of the content to real life situations or experiences which made it easier to understand. I really enjoyed the course and that was partly due to Peter’s openness and style of delivering training.”

I understand the effects of poor mental health

My experience gives me greater empathy as an instructor. When I’m delivering your training, my priority is to create a safe, open and inclusive space for every delegate.

It’s a space where people feel comfortable to share, so everyone can learn from me, the course content, and each other. And it’s a space where everyone is equal, because mental health is a human issue first and foremost.

“Peter Abbott was exceptional and created a safe space for us to learn and ask questions. I have already recommended this course to numerous colleagues.”

I’m invested in delivering results

When you’re investing in your organisation’s mental health and wellbeing, you want to take action that will create lasting and meaningful change. To achieve this, I’ll work closely with you, from our initial discussion to completion of the contract.

My approach to training is flexible. This means you’ll get the type of training you need, delivered over an appropriate length of time. And, if required, I can create bespoke mental health training to fit your organisation’s specific needs and culture.

I’m continually researching mental health, so I bring the latest thinking to my training and discussions. After every session I ask for feedback, so I’m continually monitoring the quality and value of my training.

“Not only was the course highly relevant, but the delivery of the course was also  absolutely first class and Peter is an exceptional presenter with a wealth and depth of knowledge that was quite inspiring.”
